Toddy, or kallu, is a local palm wine tradition worth trying for the curious, and a handful of kallu shops near Poovar serve it fresh alongside classic Kerala toddy-shop fare — spicy fish curry, tapioca, and other local dishes. A casual, low-key way to taste the area beyond the usual restaurant menu.
Poovar is best known for its backwaters, where mangrove-lined canals open into a wide estuary before meeting the Arabian Sea. Boating in Poovar is the area's signature experience — houseboats and canoes drift past coconut groves and fishing villages, and quieter stretches of the backwaters are well suited to kayaking for guests who prefer to paddle at their own pace. Most boat rides and kayaking trips can be arranged locally, a short drive from the villa.
Tucked within the Poovar backwaters, Sambranikodi is a small forested island reachable only by boat, named after the sambrani (frankincense) trees once grown there. It's usually visited as part of a longer backwater boat ride, with a short forest walk on the island itself — a quiet detour that pairs naturally with a Poovar boating trip.
Kovalam, one of Kerala's best-known beach towns, is within easy reach of Poovar and makes for a natural day trip. Its lighthouse beach and crescent-shaped shoreline draw visitors from across Thiruvananthapuram, and the drive down from the villa takes in stretches of coast worth stopping for along the way.
A long-standing local shrine close to Poovar, Chenkal Shiva Temple is known for its striking large-scale Shiva lingam sculpture, and makes for a quick, quieter stop for guests wanting a more spiritual side to their trip.
Perched above the coastline, Azhimala Shiva Temple is known for its striking Shiva statue set on a rocky outcrop, with sea views that make it as much a viewpoint as a place of worship.
A scenic dam on the Karamana River, Aruvikkara is a popular short trip from Thiruvananthapuram, especially when the spillway gates are open during the monsoon. The surrounding hills and riverside setting make it a quick, easy detour on the way toward the city.
For guests wanting a change from the coast, Ponmudi is a cool-climate hill station in the Western Ghats, roughly a couple of hours from Poovar. Known for its winding hairpin roads, tea and cardamom plantations, and viewpoints over the surrounding forest, it makes for an easy full-day trip that pairs well with the backwaters and beaches closer to the villa.
Neyyar Dam, on the way toward Ponmudi, combines a scenic reservoir with a wildlife sanctuary home to elephants, deer, and a crocodile rehabilitation centre. Boating on the reservoir and short forest walks make it a popular half-day trip from Poovar, and it's easy to combine with a longer drive up to the hills.
The city centre holds a cluster of attractions worth a day on their own: Trivandrum Zoo and the Napier Museum share the same green campus, along with the Priyadarsini Planetarium nearby. Close by, Kanakakunnu Palace hosts cultural events and open lawns, while the Kovalam and Vizhinjam lighthouses remain popular for coastal views. All are a comfortable drive from Poovar.
Beside Akkulam Lake, Thiruvananthapuram's glass-bottomed bridge offers lake views underfoot and has become a popular stop for visitors exploring the city, easily combined with the zoo, museum, and planetarium on the same day.
Just north of Kovalam's main beaches, the quieter Samudra Beach is a good stop for guests who want the same coastline with fewer crowds, often paired with a Kovalam visit on the same trip.
A longer day trip toward Chadayamangalam, Jatayu Earth's Center is built around a giant rock-cut sculpture of the mythological bird Jatayu, with a hilltop museum and cable car rides over the surrounding valley — a striking mix of mythology and views.
North along the coast, Varkala is known for its red cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea, lined with cafes and shops above the beach. It's a popular full-day or overnight trip from Poovar, and a good contrast to the quieter backwater setting of the villa.
Further north near Kollam, Munroe Island is a cluster of small islands formed where the Ashtamudi Lake meets the Kallada River — known for canal boat rides through narrow waterways and village life along the backwaters, a quieter alternative to the more visited Poovar and Alleppey routes.
